Cheap Fences: Budget Picks Based on What Your Fence Has to Do
The cheapest fence is the one that does exactly the job you need and nothing more. A fence to keep a dog in, a fence to mark a front yard, and a fence for privacy are three different builds, and the budget pick for each is different. Here’s how we match low-cost fences to the job for homeowners around Austin, and where going cheap ends up costing more.
For the full list of fence types we build, from wood and iron to ranch and chain link, see our fence installation services.

To keep a dog in: chain link
Chain link is hard to beat for containing pets on a budget. It’s strong, it lasts, it doesn’t need painting or sealing, and dogs can’t chew through it. Black vinyl-coated chain link blends into a yard better than bare galvanized for a modest step up. If your dog digs, ask about a buried wire apron or a bottom tension wire. See our chain link fence page.
To mark a front yard: a low rail or panel fence
A front yard fence usually needs to look good and define the space, not block the view. A 3- to 4-foot fence uses less material than a full-height one. Ranch-style rails and decorative cattle panel fences, a welded wire panel inside a wood frame, give a clean look on a modest budget and work well for keeping small kids and dogs in the front yard.
For privacy: wood, but only where you need it
For a solid privacy fence, wood is the budget pick. Pressure-treated pine costs less up front; cedar resists rot and insects better and holds its look longer. The biggest saving isn’t the wood, it’s the layout. Run the 6-foot privacy fence only on the sides where privacy matters and use chain link or ranch fence on the rest. Our affordable privacy fence options guide covers more ways to get privacy without starting over.
For acreage and livestock: wire
On large properties, the cost per foot matters more than anything. Barbed wire and woven field fence on T-posts, with braced wood or pipe corners, fence a lot of ground for the money. The bracing at corners and gates is what keeps a wire fence tight for years, so that’s not the place to cut. See ranch and farm fencing.
For curb appeal and security: aluminum or iron
If you want the look of ornamental iron, aluminum usually costs less than steel or wrought iron and won’t rust, which makes it a good budget pick for front yards and pools. Steel and wrought iron are stronger and heavier, and they’re the better choice where security matters most. See our iron fence page.
Around a pool: don’t shop on price alone
Pool barriers have to meet height, gap, and gate-latch requirements, and an HOA or city may add its own. The cheapest fence that doesn’t pass inspection isn’t cheap. Get the requirements first, then pick the lowest-cost fence that meets them. Aluminum is a common choice here.
Where cheap ends up costing more
- Shallow or skinny posts. Central Texas clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Posts that aren’t set deep enough in concrete lean within a few years.
- Untreated wood in the ground. Any wood touching soil needs to be rated for ground contact, or it rots at the ground line.
- Cheap gate hardware. Gates take more abuse than any other part of a fence. Weak hinges and latches sag first.
- DIY in rock. West of I-35, many yards hit limestone a few inches down. Without rock-drilling equipment, a weekend project can stall.
Mix materials to stretch the budget
Most yards don’t need one fence type all the way around. Privacy on the neighbor side, chain link along the back, and a low decorative fence out front is a common plan that keeps the total down. We’ll lay out options like this on the quote so you can compare. B.C. Fence is family-owned since 1996, insured and bonded, our own crews build every fence, and every job carries a 1-year warranty on labor and materials.
